Trader Joe's shoppers have until June 9 to file claims for a share of a $7.4 million class-action settlement over allegedly improper receipt printing, with eligible customers potentially collecting about $102.45 each.
The settlement covers customers who bought something at a Trader Joe's store between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, and received a receipt showing the first six and last four digits of a credit or debit card number. Those who are unsure whether they qualify can check the settlement website or call 1-888-444-7415.
The case traces back to a 2019 lawsuit filed by Brian Keim, who said he made a debit-card purchase at a Trader Joe's store in Florida in July 2019 and got a receipt that displayed the first six and last four digits of his card. The suit said that practice violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, which bars businesses from printing more than the last five digits of a customer's credit or debit card on a receipt.
Trader Joe's denied the allegations but agreed to settle earlier this year to avoid further litigation. In the settlement notice, the company said not all stores printed receipts with the disputed format and said only a small number of transactions involved those receipts in the stores where they appeared. A court notice also said no customers have reported identity theft based on the allegations in the suit.
Each eligible customer will receive a share of the settlement fund, and the final amount will depend on how many valid claims are filed after attorneys' fees, expenses and other deductions. The settlement website estimates each claimant will receive about $102.45, while checks would go out within 10 business days after final approval if there are no appeals.
The deal is not final yet. A court hearing is set for August, and the judge still has to approve the settlement before any payments are sent. For shoppers who may be covered, the real deadline is now: June 9 decides who still has a shot at the money.
