Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and wealthy businessman Rick Jackson finished first and second in Georgia’s governor primary and moved on to a runoff, setting up the next round of a race already shaped by national Republican politics.
Jones has the backing of President Donald Trump and received a late nod from Gov. Brian Kemp, while Jackson has tried to present himself as the candidate best suited to carry the MAGA banner. The runoff now decides which of the two top finishers stays alive in the governor’s race.
The contest leaves Georgia Republicans with a choice between two conservatives trying to claim the same lane, even as Jones can point to support from two of the most influential names in the party. Jackson’s pitch is narrower but direct: he is trying to own the movement language that has powered Republican politics for years.
What remains unclear from the primary result is the size of the gap between them. The top-two finish is enough to send both men forward, but the vote totals and margins will matter as each side tries to argue it has the stronger claim to the party’s base.
Jones and Jackson will now face each other in the runoff, and the winner will emerge as the Republican standard-bearer in the Georgia governor race.
