Bryant Park Knicks Watch Party added for Game 3 as MSG plaza is closed

Mayor announced Monday that Bryant Park will serve as an official Knicks watch party site for , a last-minute addition that gives fans a new, free place to gather after outdoor viewing near Madison Square Garden was blocked. The Bryant Park event is free and open to the public, but registration is required and the site will hold up to 5,000 people; registration opens at noon Monday.

Mamdani framed the decision as an effort to preserve the citywide celebrations that have followed the Knicks through the postseason. "These watch parties have become a celebration of New York City itself," he said, and added that "That’s why we’re adding Bryant Park as an additional watch party location, so even more fans can be part of this incredible Knicks Finals run." He also invited fans to join the other official gatherings scheduled for Game 3 in Central Park and at Brooklyn Bowl.

The Bryant Park announcement came after the and the determined a watch party could not be held on the Madison Square Garden plaza because of heightened security requirements tied to President ’s attendance at Game 3. Permits for the traditional outdoor event on the MSG plaza were denied, and officials said outdoor watch parties around Madison Square Garden would not proceed for this game.

Pressure on the city’s public-watch setup had been building: a Friday gathering outside Madison Square Garden led to multiple arrests, officials said, and authorities signaled that the proximity of a presidential appearance would require security measures incompatible with a large, open plaza event. The move to Bryant Park shifts where thousands of fans will try to watch a pivotal Finals game; the Knicks enter Game 3 with a 2–0 series lead.

The change introduces friction for fans who had expected the familiar scene on the MSG plaza. Organizers and city officials had to balance the desire for a communal viewing experience with the security constraints that sealed off the arena’s immediate surroundings. Mamdani acknowledged that fans come from across the city to take part: "From every borough and every neighborhood, this city has come together to cheer on the Knicks and share in a moment that belongs to all of us." He added practical encouragement: "Whether you join us in Bryant Park, Central Park or at Brooklyn Bowl, we invite New Yorkers to come together and support our team."

Practical details are straightforward. The is free but ticketed; fans should register beginning at noon Monday to claim one of the 5,000 available spots. Madison Square Garden-area watch parties are expected to resume for Game 4, so the Bryant Park event is explicitly a single-game accommodation tied to the security decision for Game 3.

The unresolved question now is how many of the thousands of Knicks supporters who would have gathered near MSG will secure tickets for Bryant Park. With only 5,000 capacity and registration opening Monday, demand is almost certain to outstrip supply. Mamdani closed his announcement with the rallying cry many fans will follow onto the streets: "Let’s go Knicks."
