Parkinson’s Centre Honored for Transformative Health and Movement Contributions

The Parkinson’s Centre® has received esteemed recognition at the 2026 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Community Awards. The center shares the Healthy and Active category award with Bamboo Projects, highlighting its commitment to improving health and movement for those affected by Parkinson’s disease.

Parkinson’s Centre: A Dedicated Hub for Health and Wellness

Located on the Sunshine Coast, The Parkinson’s Centre, commonly referred to as The Park, is the first dedicated allied health hub for people living with Parkinson’s disease in the region. Guided by the Parkinson’s Alive® protocol, the center specializes in therapy and movement programs tailored to enhance function, confidence, and overall quality of life.

Community Initiatives and Impact

In addition to core clinical services, The Park leads significant community initiatives that have become integral to the Sunshine Coast. Key programs include:

  • Step Out for Parkinson’s®: This initiative has successfully raised over $200,000 for Parkinson’s-related causes.
  • Parkinson’s Conference Sunshine Coast®: A platform for sharing knowledge and support within the Parkinson’s community.
  • Parkinson’s Support Fund: Provides essential assistance to individuals with Parkinson’s awaiting NDIS or My Aged Care access.

Founders’ Commitment to the Parkinson’s Community

Founders Barbara and Rory Cullinan expressed that this award is a recognition of both the Parkinson’s community and the dedicated team at the center. Barbara emphasized the importance of exercise in managing the disease. “Exercise is the most effective known method to slow the progression of Parkinson’s,” she stated. She noted that while medication is crucial, exercise plays a vital role in preserving mobility, independence, and confidence.

Utilizing neuroplasticity principles, the center incorporates targeted exercises that retrain clients’ brains and improve movement. Barbara also emphasized the center’s focus on fostering connection and a sense of belonging. “More importantly, we create a community,” she remarked. “People feel a part of something special—a community that understands their struggles.”

The Parkinson’s Centre® continues to make strides in transforming health and movement for those affected by Parkinson’s disease, and this recognition solidifies its role as a pillar of support within the Sunshine Coast community.
