Buccaneers Appoint Heisman Architect Fernando Mendoza as Quarterbacks Coach
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made a significant coaching change, appointing Chandler Whitmer as their new quarterbacks coach. This latest move comes as the team seeks to rejuvenate its quarterback performance ahead of the upcoming season.
Chandler Whitmer’s Background and Role
Chandler Whitmer joins the Buccaneers after a productive season as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Indiana University. There, he collaborated closely with Fernando Mendoza, a standout player who won the prestigious Heisman Trophy and led Indiana to an impressive undefeated season.
In his only year at Indiana, Mendoza threw an impressive 72% completion rate, amassing 3,535 passing yards. He recorded 41 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions, guiding the Hoosiers to a perfect 16-0 record.
Baker Mayfield and Future Expectations
Whitmer’s primary focus will now be to develop Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback, Baker Mayfield. Mayfield, a previous Heisman winner, had a challenging season in 2025. He completed 63.2% of his passes for a total of 3,963 yards, along with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His previous season, 2024, saw improved numbers, including 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns.
