Power Outage Reno: Brush fire behind Safeway sparks evacuation in Sparks

Fire crews responded Tuesday to a brush fire burning behind the Safeway in the D'Andrea area of Sparks, and smoke could be seen rising from the area as firefighters worked to contain it.

The fire quickly prompted an evacuation order for residents on Vecchio Drive east of Gino Martini Parkway, according to Watch Duty, and officials opened an evacuation shelter at the Sparks Library, 1125 12th St., for people displaced by the blaze.

Details remained limited as crews continued their response. Authorities had not said how large the fire was, whether any structures were threatened or what may have sparked the blaze.

No injuries had been reported, but the fire was still being described as a developing story as officials worked through the immediate response and evacuation measures.

The unanswered questions now are the ones that matter most to people living nearby: how far the fire spread, and whether investigators can determine what set it off.
