Tiffany Butler, 31, was arrested June 11 and was being held pending arraignment in Amsterdam City Court after investigators accused her of illegally receiving more than $50,000 in SNAP benefits. The arrest came out of a joint welfare fraud investigation led by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Social Services and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
Butler faces eight felony counts of offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree and one felony count of welfare fraud in the second degree. Investigators said she received $50,525 in SNAP benefits between August 2022 and June 2026 while failing to report all the people living in her home and all of her employment and earned income.
The case centers on a basic requirement of public assistance: recipients must disclose household and income changes so eligibility can be reassessed. Prosecutors say Butler did not do that, and the dollar figure tied to the alleged overpayment pushes the case into felony territory.
What investigators used to support the accusations has not been disclosed, but the next step is straightforward. Butler was waiting to be arraigned in Amsterdam City Court, where the charges will be formally entered and the case will begin to move through the court process.
