Tom Kean’s three-month absence raises questions as campaign enters fall

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has not voted or appeared in public for three months, but his office has kept up a near-daily stream of posts on X, and other platforms while it says he is dealing with a personal medical issue. The 57-year-old New Jersey Republican is still writing legislation, still messaging constituents and still on the ballot, even as his whereabouts remain unknown.

That split between silence and activity was on display this week. On Tuesday, Kean submitted a Congressional Record entry that made it appear he was speaking from the Capitol, beginning with, “I rise today to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Jewish Federation of West Central New Jersey,” even though he has not been seen publicly for months. On May 29, he introduced a bill focused on the screening and early detection of preeclampsia, showing that his office continues to move work under his name while he remains out of sight.

Kean’s office did not respond to a request for comment, but it has posted that he will return within “a matter of weeks.” That message has done little to quiet the questions around a congressman who represents one of the most closely watched districts in the country and whose seat is expected to be among the most competitive House races of the cycle.

The gap between the public record and public visibility has become part of the story. Kean’s team keeps publishing legislative activity and social media updates, yet no explanation has been disclosed beyond the reference to a personal medical issue. For constituents, colleagues and even his own campaign, the uncertainty is now unfolding in real time while the election calendar keeps moving.

The political stakes are immediate. President renewed his support for Kean on the day before Tuesday’s primary, posting on that “HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” Kean reposted the endorsement and ran unopposed, but he will face Democrat in the fall. Bennett is a healthcare executive and former Navy helicopter pilot, and the has rated the race a toss-up.

Some Republicans are asking for more. Rep. said, “We need to get some answers. I think that’d be good for everybody,” and added, “Transparency, we need some transparency.” Democrat took a softer line on privacy but said voters still deserve clarity, saying, “Everybody is certainly entitled to their own privacy. So if there’s something seriously wrong, then I think his constituents have the right to know what’s really going on.” She added, “The lack of information only creates more mystery.”

Kean is a two-term congressman and a member of one of New Jersey’s most prominent political dynasties, which makes the unanswered questions around his absence harder to separate from the campaign itself. For now, his office says he is expected back within weeks. The bigger question is whether that return comes soon enough to restore confidence before the fall race tightens further.
