Cities: Skylines 2 Developer Prioritizes Key Updates

Following the unexpected news in November about the departure of longtime developer Colossal Order from the Cities: Skylines franchise, the game’s publisher, Paradox, has unveiled new plans. Iceflake, known for developing Surviving the Aftermath, is now leading development on Cities: Skylines 2. Their focus is on essential updates that will enhance the player experience.

Cities: Skylines 2 Updates from Iceflake

Iceflake recently shared an overview of the upcoming changes in a City Corner Developer Diary. These updates are centered around significant visual and usability improvements.

User Interface Enhancements

  • Streamlined onboarding process for new cities
  • More expressive and context-aware icons
  • Clearer colors and visual styles in toolbars

The development team acknowledges that the current user interface can sometimes lead to confusion. Their goal is to make it more intuitive and accessible for players.

New In-Game Encyclopedia

A notable feature in the pipeline is an in-game Encyclopedia. This will allow players to quickly search for information on various gameplay topics. However, this feature may not be included in Iceflake’s first update.

Visual Style Improvements

In terms of city aesthetics, Iceflake aims to enhance visual customization. Players will have the option to set custom colors for buildings, props, and vehicles. This initiative takes inspiration from a “recolor” patch previously developed.

  • Custom recoloring for trees and plants planned for future patches

Though some features will take longer to implement, Iceflake’s roadmap indicates a commitment to ongoing improvement. The community can expect further updates to refine and expand the Cities: Skylines 2 experience.
