Google Phone App Launches ‘Keep Portrait Mode’ Setting on Android
Google has introduced a new feature in its Phone app, allowing users to maintain portrait mode during calls. This update comes after a period of testing in December and January.
New ‘Keep Portrait Mode’ Feature
The “Keep portrait mode on calls” setting aims to prevent the automatic shift to landscape orientation that can occur during phone calls. Previously, users experienced a two-column interface in landscape mode, which included the calling card, contact details, and call controls. This design, while functional on larger screens, proved inconvenient for those who did not have auto-rotate settings disabled.
How to Activate the Feature
To access this new setting, follow these steps:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the menu icon (three vertical bars).
- Select ‘Settings’ followed by ‘Display options.’
- Find and toggle the ‘Keep portrait mode’ option.
The feature is enabled by default based on user feedback. However, users can disable it if they prefer the automatic landscape mode.
Wider Rollout and Updates
The “Keep portrait mode” setting is gradually being deployed alongside version 206 of the Google Phone app. Some users may need to force stop the app for the new feature to appear. This rollout is designed to enhance user experience, particularly for those frequently on the move.
