New York Property Tax Relief expands as STAR checks head to millions

Nearly 3 million New Yorkers are set to get more than $2 billion in STAR property tax relief this summer and fall, with Gov. saying the checks will help homeowners get “a little breathing room.” The rollout, announced Tuesday, will send annual tax break payments to almost a quarter of a million homeowners in the Capital Region alone.

The covers a slice of the school taxes homeowners pay in New York, and the benefit is not the same for everyone. Homeowners with incomes under $500,000 will receive tax breaks of $350 to $600, while seniors with incomes below $110,750 will get rebates between $700 and $1,500. Some homeowners will receive a tax exemption instead of a rebate check, depending on how they qualify.

The state says the program does not leave schools short because it makes up the difference between the rebate and the taxes. That is the piece that has long defined STAR: homeowners see the relief, but local school districts are held harmless through state funding.

For the Capital Region, the numbers are immediate and specific. More than $136 million is headed to taxpayers there, part of a broader statewide payment cycle that will continue through the summer and fall. Homeowners can check the status of their rebate at ny.gov/STAR as the checks move through the mail.

The open question is not whether the money is coming. It is which homeowners will get a check, which will get an exemption, and exactly when each payment lands. For now, the state has put the timeline in motion, and eligible homeowners have a place to track where they stand.
