A car fire on the M6 near Junction 14 shut the northbound exit slip-road for Stafford North on Tuesday morning after flames spread to traffic lights and a grass embankment just off the motorway.
Three fire engines and police were sent to the outskirts of Stafford after the alarm was raised at 5.20am. Fire crews found the car well alight, put it out with two hose reel jets and arranged recovery for the vehicle, while part of Eccleshall Road at Junction 14 was also closed.
By just before 5.30am, traffic service Inrix said the northbound exit slip-road was blocked and smoke was blowing across the road. Even so, traffic was described as coping well, despite the blocked slip-road and the smoke drifting across the carriageway during the morning rush hour.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said nobody was hurt. The cause of the fire has not been stated, and crews had left the scene by around 7am after the vehicle was recovered.
Staffordshire Police’s road crime team told drivers heading into Stafford to consider alternative routes, suggesting Junction 13 or Junction 15 and then the A34. The disruption was brief, but it hit a key M6 exit at the start of the day and closed the direct route into Stafford while crews worked at the scene.
