Hatboro police investigate counterfeit cash theft at Wawa on South York Road

Hatboro police are investigating a retail theft at the at 412 S. York Road after a man allegedly used counterfeit money to buy gift cards on Friday night and fled on foot toward Horsham Road.

The incident happened at 9:20 p.m. on June 12. Police have not said whether the man was identified or arrested, leaving the case open as investigators try to piece together who was behind the purchase and the getaway.

The store is a familiar stop in Hatboro, which makes the details of the case more than a routine shoplifting report: counterfeit cash was used in a transaction that ended with the suspect running from the scene. That combination gives police a limited trail, and it also puts the burden on anyone who saw the man, the transaction, or the direction he took after leaving the store.

The asked anyone with information to contact at 215-675-2832. For now, that is the only next step publicly identified, and the unanswered question is the most basic one in the case — who the man was, and whether police can find him from the evidence and tips they gather now.
