Five people were stabbed at Penn Station in New York City on Sunday evening, and a suspect was quickly taken into custody, according to the FDNY. Police said the attack happened around 7 p.m. and left at least one person seriously injured.
Officers asked the public to avoid the area as they responded to the scene near one of the city’s busiest transit hubs. Officials warned of traffic delays, road closures and mass transit disruptions as the investigation unfolded.
A law enforcement source close to the investigation said preliminary reports suggest the stabbing was a random act of violence, but authorities have not said what motivated the attack. That question matters because Penn Station sits at the center of daily movement in Midtown Manhattan, where disruptions can quickly ripple through commuters, travelers and nearby streets.
The case now turns on two facts that remain unanswered: why the victims were attacked and how badly the seriously injured person is doing. Investigators are still working through those details, and for now the arrest has done little to settle the bigger question of whether this was an isolated outburst or something more deliberate.
