All northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway were shut down at Howard Hughes Parkway near Los Angeles International Airport after a police shooting on the freeway, stopping traffic on one of the region’s busiest airport approaches just before 5:30 a.m.
Los Angeles police were pursuing a robbery suspect and opened fire on the freeway just before 4:30 a.m., according to officials. By the time the lanes were closed, the California Highway Patrol said all northbound traffic was being diverted off at Howard Hughes Parkway, and the ramps at Sepulveda Boulevard and La Tijera Boulevard were also closed.
The closure put a hard stop on northbound travel through the area near LAX, with drivers forced off the freeway and onto local streets while the incident remained active. The CHP did not have an estimate for when the lanes would reopen, even after the 405 closure was in effect.
That leaves the main unanswered question on the corridor: when the northbound lanes will open again. For now, the closure remains in place, the detours are set, and drivers headed toward the airport area have no official timeline to work with.
