Five people were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 northbound in Martin County, and all northbound lanes were closed while law enforcement investigated the wreck. The collision happened just before 10 p.m. near Exit 101 and Halpatiokee Regional Park, and one vehicle caught fire at the scene before crews put it out.
Florida Highway Patrol said injuries were reported in the crash, and Florida 511 posted an update at 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday night about a separate Martin County crash report before Kanner Highway. In the Monday night crash, two people suffered traumatic injuries and were taken to the hospital, while three others had minor injuries and were also transported for medical care.
The response shut down a major stretch of I-95 northbound, a corridor that can back up quickly when traffic is forced off the interstate. Martin County Fire Rescue handled the vehicle fire as investigators worked the scene, and the lanes were not open again until Tuesday morning.
The two crash reports that surfaced in Martin County point to the same problem for drivers: northbound I-95 was disrupted, injuries were reported, and officials had to clear the road before traffic could move again. What the reports do not say is what caused either wreck, or whether citations or charges followed the Monday night collision.
For anyone trying to understand the risk after a highway pileup, the immediate facts are straightforward. Five people went to the hospital, two with traumatic injuries, three with minor injuries, and the road was closed long enough to keep northbound traffic off I-95 until the next morning.
