United Flight 1551, traveling from Newark to Guatemala City, was diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport on Thursday night after the pilot reported an unruly passenger tried to open Door 2L at 36,000 feet and then assaulted a fellow passenger. The Boeing 737 Max 8 landed safely at 8:38 p.m., and no injuries were reported.
United said the flight was met by law enforcement to address an unruly passenger, and the FBI said it responded to the incident at Dulles Airport. The flight was canceled after the diversion, and United scheduled a replacement flight for Friday morning while providing overnight accommodations to the 145 passengers and six crew members on board.
The event unfolded during a routine international trip that turned into a law enforcement response before the plane reached its destination. In aviation terms, a mid-flight attempt to open a door is one of the most serious disruptions a crew can face, and the added report of an assault made the diversion immediate rather than optional.
That leaves one fact standing out over the rest: the aircraft landed safely, and no one was hurt. The disruption ended with the plane on the ground at Dulles and the passenger later meeting law enforcement, while the rest of the travelers were put on a replacement flight Friday morning.
