Lawsuit Alleges Tesla Autopilot Thrusts Las Vegas Car Into Traffic
Two Las Vegas men have sued Tesla after an alleged autopilot malfunction sent their vehicle into oncoming traffic. The collision occurred on April 3, 2024, according to court papers.
Plaintiffs Simen Ghassan Shamoun and Steven Shamoun filed the suit in Clark County District Court. They are seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.
Crash account
The complaint says Simen Shamoun was driving a 2024 Tesla Model Y with Steven Shamoun as passenger. They were northbound on Spencer Street when the vehicle made an unexpected wide right turn onto Richmar Avenue.
The turn placed the Tesla into westbound traffic, and it struck another vehicle. Both men suffered significant injuries. Simen Shamoun incurred medical bills exceeding $13,000. Steven Shamoun’s medical expenses topped $10,000.
Allegations against Autopilot
The plaintiffs contend the automated steering system behaved erratically. The lawsuit alleges Tesla Autopilot performed a maneuver that thrust the car into oncoming traffic.
They say no road hazard, traffic control device, or driver input caused the turn. The filing asserts the action was inconsistent with safe Autopilot operation.
Preliminary inspection and expert review
A preliminary inspection and expert review are cited in the complaint. Those experts concluded a malfunction in steering control software or related sensors likely misinterpreted roadway geometry.
Claims and damages sought
The suit accuses Tesla of strict product liability, including design defect and failure to warn. It also alleges negligence, negligent misrepresentation, and breach of warranty.
The plaintiffs seek compensation for property damage, special damages, and general damages exceeding $15,000. They also request interest, court costs, and attorney’s fees.
