Canada to Alter Lotto Max Odds
Changes are coming to Canada’s Lotto Max game, affecting ticket prices, lines, and prize odds. Starting April 10, the cost of a Lotto Max ticket will increase from $5 to $6. Each ticket will then include four lines instead of three. Players will now select seven numbers from a pool of 52, increased from 50.
Impact on Winning Odds
According to Michael Wallace, an associate professor of biostatistics at the University of Waterloo, these modifications will lead to a modest increase in the expected value for players. This means that over time, players might get back more money relative to their ticket cost.
However, with a larger number pool, the odds of winning individual prizes have slightly decreased. “As the range of numbers increases, the chance of winning any single play declines,” Wallace explained. The new ticket format provides four plays per ticket, thereby slightly balancing the odds.
Odds of Winning
- The odds of winning the jackpot change from approximately 1 in 33.3 million to about 1 in 33.4 million.
- Overall odds of winning any prize improve from 1 in 7 to roughly 1 in 5.8.
Players can expect to notice a slight increase in winning smaller prizes. For instance, they may find it easier to win free plays or smaller cash amounts. Wallace noted, “Your chances of winning some of those smaller prizes has actually increased a little bit.”
New Prize Structure
The revamped Lotto Max will also introduce new $100,000 prizes tied to the jackpot size, reminiscent of the existing MaxMillion draws. While these new prizes may be exciting, Wallace cautioned that their odds remain very low. Nonetheless, they add an extra incentive for those willing to try their luck.
Additionally, the maximum jackpot amount will increase from $80 million to $90 million, providing players with a potentially larger reward.
In summary, while the adjustments to Lotto Max will increase costs and modify how prizes are structured, they also introduce improved odds of winning smaller amounts. Players should consider these changes as they adapt their strategies for this popular lottery game in Canada.
