Nolan McLean Optimistic as He Prepares for First Full Mets Season

Nolan McLean enters the season optimistic about taking a larger role with the Mets. He will make his first start that the club is billing as “McLean Day” this Sunday. Last year’s late-season surge gave fans a glimpse of his potential.

Minor-league ascent

McLean rose rapidly through the club’s system. He moved from the Florida Complex League to Low-A St. Lucie and then to High-A Brooklyn.

He spent most of 2024 with Double-A Binghamton. There he made 18 starts and posted a 4.19 ERA. The season before, he had a 1.37 ERA in five starts at that level.

Major-league debut and last season

The right-hander received a mid-August call-up last year. He showed a calm transition to the majors and delivered eight strong starts.

Those outings had him lined up for a Game 1 playoff assignment that never materialized. In total, he appeared in 29 games across the minors and majors last season.

International stage and velocity gains

McLean impressed at the World Baseball Classic. Scouts noted his “filthy” breaking pitches during the tournament.

His four-seam fastball averaged 95.8 mph in the major leagues last year. At the WBC, it touched 97.7 mph. He also worked to build endurance, topping out at 63 pitches in the WBC final.

Pitch repertoire and adjustments

Originally a college reliever and outfielder, McLean has only been a starter for about a season and a half. He still refines several pitches.

This winter he emphasized a cutter to neutralize left-handed hitters. He also devoted time to a kick-changeup to add more depth and consistency.

Workload targets and outlook

McLean says he feels better prepared physically and mentally. He mentioned improved pitchability and greater confidence in multiple offerings.

He set a goal near 35 appearances this year. For reference, last year’s major-league leader in appearances was Logan Webb with 34.

What to expect on McLean Day

Fans should expect a pitcher with added polish and a stronger body. The Mets will test whether last season’s gains translate to a first full Mets season.

Manager Carlos Mendoza praised McLean’s makeup and readiness. The club and its supporters will watch closely as he continues his development.
