Nintendo Switch 2 Handheld Boost Arrives With Version 22.0.0 Surprise Update

The new system software Version 22. 0. 0 introduces a Handheld Mode Boost feature — referenced here as Nintendo Switch 2 Handheld Boost — available on both Switch 2 and Switch. The surprise update also bundles routine stability fixes, language additions and user-interface tweaks in the eShop, while adding a guide and steps for enabling and disabling the boost.

How Nintendo Switch 2 Handheld Boost Works

Patch notes explain that Handheld Mode Boost, when enabled, causes the performance of compatible Switch software while undocked to run as if it were being played in TV Mode on the original hardware. Practically, that lets the Switch 2 use its 1080p handheld display in place of the original console’s 720p handheld profile, producing sharper visuals for some titles and providing performance boosts for others. The update package pairs the new feature with instructions on how to activate or disable the setting.

Which Games Are Blocked From the Boost

Not all Switch titles can use Handheld Mode Boost. Games currently blocked from the upgrade include Super Mario Maker 2, Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Skyward Sword HD, Clubhouse Games, Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!, and Pikmin 1+2. The common thread among many exempt titles appears to be motion or touchscreen control schemes that are difficult to map when emulating docked-mode behavior on handheld hardware. The list may expand as more exemptions become apparent.

App Update And Early Game Tests

Alongside the system firmware, a mobile app update to version 3. 3. 0 is rolling out on iOS and Android and adds a friend-notes feature; that same friend-note capability was also added to the console software for both Switch 2 and Switch. Early testing of the handheld boost has produced varied results across games.

Examples of observed changes include: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim saw performance boosts in combat sequences and a higher-resolution handheld image with crisper UI text. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy benefits from a full 1080p image in boost mode, but loses touchscreen support when run as if in TV Mode. Dragon Quest Builders 2 gained resolution clarity on the 1080p screen but experienced noticeable frame-rate drops when boost was enabled, leading to a recommendation to play that title without boost for now. Dragon Quest XI S did not suffer performance issues under backward compatibility, though handheld profile differences were noted.

Testers also point out that handheld capture for Switch 1 titles remains capped to 720p for games that have not received official enhancements, so system-capture comparisons will not always reflect the full on-device improvement the boost can deliver.

The update pairs a substantive new backward-compatibility enhancement with routine system maintenance and an app refresh. Users can enable or disable Handheld Mode Boost through the new settings guide included in the Version 22. 0. 0 patch notes, and the list of incompatible games will be monitored and updated as more titles are checked.
