Woking Football Club has appointed Jermain Defoe as its new manager. He joins after a notable playing career at the highest levels of the game.

Coaching experience and fit

Defoe developed coaching skills within Tottenham Hotspur’s academy. He also served as a player-coach at Rangers, working alongside Steven Gerrard.

The club’s official statement said a thorough recruitment process identified Defoe. His leadership style and footballing philosophy matched the long-term vision.

Leadership and club direction

Chairman Todd Johnson highlighted Defoe’s on-field record and his approach to standards. Johnson emphasised the manager’s focus on leadership and player development.

Director of Football Jody Brown pointed to Defoe’s passion for the game. Brown said alignment with the preferred playing philosophy mattered most.

Coaching team and interim arrangements

Paul Bracewell will join as assistant coach. He brings experience from Fulham, Sunderland and Halifax, and won a league title with Everton.

Craig Ross and Jake Hyde will remain in key coaching roles. The interim coaching team, including Dale Gorman, will lead the side through Tuesday’s fixture with Altrincham FC.

The club placed on record its sincere thanks to the interim staff. Their contribution during the transition was described as outstanding.

Off-field profile and honours

Defoe is widely respected for his character and charitable work. He founded the Jermain Defoe Foundation to support vulnerable children in Saint Lucia.

He received an OBE for his charity work and dedicated the honour to Bradley Lowery. His close bond with Bradley remains part of his public profile.

Defoe will take part in an introductory media session at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, 1 April. The event will be held in the Cardinal Bar at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.
