Piastri Tops Melbourne Time Sheets with Fastest Lap
Oscar Piastri has made headlines by setting the fastest lap during the practice sessions for this weekend’s Formula 1 season opener in Melbourne. The McLaren driver showcased his skills by clocking a remarkable time of 1:19.729 during the second practice session.
Piastri Leads the Pack in Melbourne
Piastri’s impressive performance placed him one second ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris, who struggled with a gearbox issue earlier in the day. Norris finished the second session in seventh place.
Top Performers in Practice
The practice sessions revealed a competitive lineup, with Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell securing the second and third positions, respectively. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc rounded out the top five after leading the first practice session.

Aston Martin Struggles
Aston Martin faced significant challenges on the track. The team managed only 33 laps across both practice sessions, hampered by a battery issue. Lance Stroll completed just three laps in the first session, while Fernando Alonso opted not to race.
Alonso did perform better in the second session but was still nearly five seconds off Piastri’s best time. The team is currently using their last two operational batteries, putting them in a precarious situation for the upcoming Australian Grand Prix.
Team Principal’s Concerns
“We’ve had conditioning problems or communication problems with two of those batteries,” said team principal Adrian Newey. “This situation is quite a scary place to be in.” If either battery fails, the drivers may not be able to compete.
Red Bull and the New Power Unit
Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion, finished sixth overall. This year marks Red Bull’s first season using a self-built power unit developed in collaboration with Ford. Verstappen had a minor scare during the session when he veered off the track but skillfully regained control.
Challenges for Newcomer Cadillac
Cadillac faced difficulties with driver Sergio Perez, who spent most of the second session in the garage. He managed only two laps before his car stopped on the track, indicating more work is needed ahead of the next practice.
Looking Ahead
A final 60-minute practice session is scheduled for tomorrow, leading up to the qualifying rounds for Sunday’s race in Melbourne. Teams will aim to address their issues as they prepare for the season opener.
