The Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 project has taken significant strides forward with the announcement of two shortlisted consortia for its final construction works. This initiative aims to enhance one of Victoria’s busiest rail corridors, creating a specialized line to Melbourne Airport and increasing overall network capacity.

Project Objectives and Scope
The final construction package is designed to widen the rail corridor. Key elements include:
- Adding new tracks
- Constructing two new regional platforms at Sunshine Station
- Extending the station concourse
This initiative forms part of a broader $143 million upgrade by the Victorian Government aimed at revitalizing the Sunshine Station precinct. The upgrade will also include:
- A new walking and cycling connection across the rail line
- An upgraded bus interchange
- New open spaces and forecourts
Capacity and Future Developments
The Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1 will significantly enhance capacity in the corridor, allowing over 1,000 trains daily. This improvement will lead to more frequent services for passengers traveling on the Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo lines. The project is also expected to lay the groundwork for future enhancements, including the electrification of the Melton Line.
Current Progress and Timeline
Early works are currently in progress, focusing on relocating underground utilities between Albion and Sunshine to facilitate the installation of new rail infrastructure. Crews are actively working from the Albion Station car park, installing large pipeline sections in preparation for tunnel boring, which is set to commence next month. The full project aims for completion by 2030.
Harriet Shing, the State Minister for Development Victoria and Precincts, emphasized the project’s significance. She stated, “We’re investing in the growing Sunshine Precinct – better services, more jobs, stronger business investment, and the transport connections that help families live, work and play locally.”
