Google Meet Launches on Android Auto, Restricts Work Accounts

Google Meet has officially launched on Android Auto, providing users with a convenient way to stay connected while driving. However, this introduction comes with a significant limitation: support for work accounts is currently unavailable.

Google Meet and Android Auto Launch Details

Last week, Google announced the rollout of Google Meet for Apple CarPlay, and quickly followed up with a version for Android Auto. This new feature allows users to check their schedules and join calls directly from their vehicle’s display. The initial rollout is beginning to reach some users, as noted by Android Authority through screenshots of the app’s pop-up notifications.

Key Features of Google Meet on Android Auto

While specific details about the user interface are still scarce, here are some key features highlighted by Google:

  • Join calls directly without the pre-call screen.
  • Video is automatically disabled during ongoing calls.
  • A “Scheduled tab” displays any meetings from your calendar.
  • Microphone muting is possible during calls.
  • Additional features like Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls are disabled for safety reasons.
  • Only basic call information and controls are displayed, while presentations and participant details are hidden.

Limitations of Google Meet on Android Auto

Despite the promising features, Google Meet on Android Auto does not support work accounts. Google’s support page explicitly states:

  • Work profile accounts are not supported.
  • Active calls will appear on the screen, but upcoming meetings and call history will not be accessible.

This restriction seems particularly unusual, as many potential users would benefit from Google Meet while performing work-related tasks on the road. In contrast, the feature for Apple CarPlay does not mention this limitation for work accounts.

Future Rollout Plans

The Google Meet feature for Android Auto is currently rolling out, and many users await its broader availability. As development progresses, feedback on the app’s performance is encouraged, particularly concerning the app versions in use.
