Gunfire in Teotihuacán Sparks Fear as 15 Tourists Fall Fleeing Pyramid

Authorities reported two deaths after a shooting at the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán on Monday. One victim was a Canadian tourist, and the suspected attacker died by suicide.

Casualties and medical care

Gunfire in Teotihuacán frightened visitors, and about 15 tourists were injured while fleeing the pyramid. Emergency teams moved victims to nearby hospitals for care.

Cristóbal Castañeda, head of the State of Mexico security agency, confirmed four people were shot. He said the wounded included two Colombians, one Russian, and one Canadian.

Hospital report

The General Hospital of Axapusco, part of IMSS Bienestar, reported treating seven injured people. Four had gunshot wounds. One patient suffered a fracture; another had a sprain. One person was treated for an anxiety attack. One of the wounded is a minor.

How the attack unfolded

The shooting began shortly before midday. Witnesses heard detonations coming from the second platform of the 45-meter pyramid.

A video shared on social media shows a woman shouting for someone to call the police amid the shots. Tourists, including foreigners, then began to evacuate the archaeological area.

Authorities recovered a firearm, a bladed weapon, and live cartridges at the scene. Officials say the alleged attacker later took his own life.

Security response and investigation

State and municipal authorities deployed a major security operation. The National Guard, the Mexican Army, state police, and local officers joined the search for other possible perpetrators.

The archaeological zone was evacuated and closed to the public. Prosecutors and forensic teams arrived minutes later to collect the bodies and process the scene.

Federal agencies, including the interior ministry, coordinated with the state government to assist victims. The Pyramid of the Moon remains cordoned while investigators work.
