Raiders Elevate Rob Leonard to Defensive Coordinator Position

The Las Vegas Raiders have appointed Rob Leonard as their new defensive coordinator. This marks Leonard’s first role in this capacity within the NFL.

Leonard’s Coaching Journey

Rob Leonard began his coaching career in 2013 with the New York Giants, serving as a defensive assistant coach. His expertise expanded when he joined the Miami Dolphins from 2019 to 2021, taking on various roles.

In 2022, Leonard worked under coach John Harbaugh in Baltimore as the outside linebackers coach. His diverse coaching background has equipped him for the challenges ahead with the Raiders.

Changes at Raiders

The Raiders decided to part ways with former defensive coordinator Patrick Graham following a disappointing 3-14 record in the 2025 season. Graham has since joined Mike McCarthy’s staff in Pittsburgh as the Steelers’ defensive coordinator.

Defensive Challenges Ahead

Leonard takes charge of a Raiders defense that has struggled significantly in recent seasons. Las Vegas ranked 25th in the league, allowing an average of 25.4 points per game, and was 24th in sacks.

This presents a considerable turnaround opportunity for Leonard. He will need to address these deficiencies, especially with the upcoming free agency period and the 2026 NFL Draft.

Upcoming NFL Draft Opportunities

Interestingly, the Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. There is speculation that they may select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. However, Head Coach Kubiak has indicated that further analysis of potential draft picks is necessary before making a final decision.

Over the next few weeks, Kubiak and his team will review their options. For the time being, Rob Leonard steps in as the new defensive coordinator, ready to reshape the Raiders’ defensive strategy.
