ABC Radio Presenter Retires Due to Cancer Diagnosis
James Valentine, a veteran presenter with ABC Radio, has made the difficult decision to retire after a battle with cancer. His last appearance on the air occurred after June, following his diagnosis of omentum cancer, which affects tissues around the stomach and intestines. Valentine, who has been a familiar voice on ABC Radio Sydney since the 1980s, shared the news during a brief return to the Afternoons program.
James Valentine’s Career and Health Struggles
At 64 years old, Valentine reflected on his extensive career, emphasizing his connection with the ABC. “My entire life has been soaked in the ABC,” he expressed during his farewell announcement. His diagnosis of cancer initially came in March 2024, when he was informed he had oesophageal cancer. Following this, he chose a less invasive treatment route, opting for tumor removal instead of removing the entire oesophagus. Unfortunately, new tumours were detected by June, prompting his retirement.
Impact on Listeners and Legacy
For over 20 years, Valentine’s Afternoons program provided a unique platform for creativity and audience interaction. Unlike other programs, it encouraged participation through light-hearted and imaginative segments. He thanked his listeners for their support and engagement, sharing enjoyable moments together.
- Valentine began his journey with ABC Radio Sydney as a presenter for a children’s television show in the late 1980s.
- He was a member of the rock band Models during his early career.
- His innovative talkback segments, like Rant and This is What I Live With, became popular among listeners.
- In recognition of his work, he won a Bronze Award at the 2020 New York Festival’s Radio Awards.
Looking Ahead
As Valentine takes time to focus on his health and well-being, the ABC Radio community will continue to feel the impact of his work. His recent advice to his successor emphasized the importance of creativity and the freedom present in the Afternoons slot. “Come and have a go at this marvellous shift,” he encouraged, inviting a new voice to explore the role without restrictions.
A two-hour retrospective of Valentine’s contributions to the Afternoons program will air Friday, allowing listeners to celebrate his 25 years of memorable broadcasts on ABC Radio Sydney. James O’Loghlin has been filling in since June, although a permanent replacement has yet to be determined.
