The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has introduced an innovative project named STELLAR-AI, aimed at transforming fusion energy research. Utilizing artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, the initiative seeks to propel the development of commercially viable fusion energy systems.
Overview of STELLAR-AI
Officially titled Simulation, Technology, and Experiment Leveraging Learning-Accelerated Research enabled by AI, STELLAR-AI is designed to integrate high-fidelity computer simulations with cutting-edge experimental technologies. This integration will enable real-time data analysis, significantly enhancing research capabilities.
Leadership and Objectives
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), a national laboratory under the DOE, will spearhead the STELLAR-AI initiative. According to Jonathan Menard, PPPL’s deputy director for research, AI and high-performance computing are essential for optimizing designs for economic construction and operation of fusion systems. As part of the project, PPPL will leverage its National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U), a large spherical tokamak, to identify ideal conditions for fuel, measurement, and control tools, aiming to develop a prototype for commercial fusion power.
Creating a Digital Twin
STELLAR-AI will utilize AI to create a digital twin of the NSTX-U. This model will facilitate advancements in developing a fusion pilot plant, which is a crucial step towards harnessing fusion energy commercially.

STELLAR-AI is aligned with the Genesis Mission, a national initiative promoted by President Donald Trump through a November executive order.
