Kiwis Confirm Poaching Bust; Kiss Announces Successor

The Queensland Reds have officially appointed Vern Cotter as their new head coach, succeeding Les Kiss starting from 2027. Cotter, currently with the Auckland Blues, has signed a two-year contract following Kiss’s transition to coach the Wallabies at the end of the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season.

Background of Vern Cotter

Vern Cotter brings a wealth of experience to the Queensland Reds. He recently led the Auckland Blues to victory in the 2024 premiership and previously enjoyed success with Clermont Auvergne in France’s Top 14. His international coaching career includes guiding Scotland in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and serving as Fiji’s head coach from 2020 to 2023.

Cotter’s Vision for the Reds

Cotter expressed enthusiasm about his upcoming role, stating, “I did my homework. The Queensland mindset is strong.” He recognized the professionalism and ambition of the Queensland Rugby Union (QRU), noting its strong organizational structure and clear vision.

His connection with Sam Cordingley, the Reds’ general manager of high performance, stems from their time together in France. This relationship, alongside his admiration for Australian rugby culture, made the position appealing to Cotter.

Reds and Wallabies Transition

Les Kiss’s delay in taking over the Wallabies role has afforded the Queensland Reds additional time to search for the right successor. Initially, Kiss was expected to step into the position after the last Spring Tour but will now remain with the Reds until the end of the 2026 season.

Future Plans for the Reds

Cotter’s goal is clear: “We train to win.” He believes in the potential of the Queensland Reds, citing the club’s impressive history of player development and the strength of its junior programs. His focus will be on improving as a coach while elevating the performance of the Reds in the competitive landscape of Australian rugby.
