Firefighters battled a four-alarm blaze near 149 Atlantic Ave. at Wells Beach on June 14, and when the fire was knocked down, the home appeared to be a total loss. Strong winds raised concerns that the flames could spread to nearby homes, but crews said they kept the fire from taking out more of the neighborhood.
Wells firefighters were called to the structure fire and arrived to find the home fully engulfed. Multiple departments rushed in as mutual aid, and by 6 p.m. the Wells Police Department said Atlantic Avenue was closed because of the active working fire scene. Abutting properties sustained fire damage, adding to the damage done in the blaze.
The Wells Police Department credited firefighters with saving numerous surrounding structures while quickly bringing the main source of the fire under control. It praised the quick and precise work of Wells firefighters, communications staff and other mutual aid agencies, and said the crews were absolute professionals who executed flawlessly.
Kennebunk firefighters later called it a devastating fire and said crews from numerous communities worked seamlessly together to keep it from destroying more homes. The fire department had not released additional details, including what started the blaze, leaving that question open after the emergency response wound down.
