Duquesne Light still restoring power after storms leave thousands in the dark

was still working Friday morning to restore service after Thursday afternoon storms knocked out power to more than 2,400 of its customers, even after crews had already brought electricity back to about 33,000 others. Around 6:30 a.m., close to 4,000 customers were still without power across the region.

The utility said over 1,700 of the outages were in Allegheny County and 678 were in Beaver County, where trees, utility poles and power lines were brought down in the storm. Duquesne Light said its crews had responded to the outages and were assessing damage to determine restoration priorities and estimated times for service restoration.

The scale of the outage was far larger at the height of the storm, when more than 40,000 Duquesne Light customers were without power. High wind gusts exceeding 50 mph hit the area, and Pittsburgh International Airport recorded gusts up to 53 mph.

The storm caused widespread damage across Southwestern Pennsylvania, and the utility said it was also watching conditions closely because of the possibility of additional severe weather on Friday. That left the open question for customers still waiting in the dark: when the last repairs will be finished and service will come back on.
