Memphis Weather: Scattered Friday storms, summer heat build into weekend

Memphis weather turns more unsettled Friday, with scattered showers and storms expected as temperatures climb from the upper 70s around sunrise into the mid to upper 80s by afternoon. Clouds will thicken through the day, and the main concern will be brief downpours in parts of the area while humidity hangs on.

Friday morning begins warm, then stays mostly cloudy as the day goes on. By afternoon, the heat pushes into the mid to upper 80s, but the moisture in the air will make it feel heavier than the thermometer suggests. Overnight, temperatures are expected to ease down through the 80s and into the mid 70s by sunrise Saturday, with passing clouds and mostly dry conditions Friday night.

Saturday should offer a different look for most of the region. More peeks of sunshine are expected, and skies are forecast to be partly cloudy, with rain staying away for most areas. Highs should warm near 90 degrees, and humidity will make it feel more like the mid 90s. The one exception is the northernmost part of the area, where a 1/5 risk for severe storms remains in place, a small but real wrinkle in an otherwise mostly dry day.

The weekend pattern does not stay settled for long. Scattered showers and storms are expected to return Sunday and Monday, though the forecast does not point to a washout. Highs then are expected to dip into the lower to middle 80s, giving the area a brief break from the stronger heat before summer temperatures rebuild.

By midweek, drier weather with more periods of sunshine is expected to return, and highs should climb back into the 90s. For anyone planning outdoor time in the Memphis area, Friday looks like the day most likely to bring quick rain interruptions, Saturday looks mainly hot and dry for most locations, and the next broader round of showers should wait until Sunday and Monday.
