A warehouse fire broke out along Promontory Parkway in Tracy on Thursday afternoon, sending a thick black plume of smoke over the city as emergency crews rushed to the scene. The fire remained a developing story late Thursday, with officials urging people to stay clear of the area near Hansen Road.
At about 1:45 p.m., the Tracy Police Department told residents to avoid Promontory Parkway near Hansen Road and said it was assisting with evacuations. But San Joaquin County Emergency Services said there were no evacuation orders, underscoring the uneven picture for people trying to figure out how far the response had spread.
The Tracy Fire Department said it was receiving mutual aid from other agencies, a sign the response had already outgrown a single department’s resources. ALERTCalifornia cameras also showed a large black plume rising from the area, matching what drivers and nearby residents could see from across Tracy.
What caused the fire was not immediately known, and officials had not said what was damaged. For now, the urgent question is not the origin of the blaze but how long crews will need to keep Promontory Parkway closed and whether the evacuation guidance changes as the response continues.
