A student from another school district became unresponsive at High Meadow on Wednesday while Wethersfield 8th graders were on a field trip there, prompting staff and emergency responders to move quickly.
School officials said the Wethersfield students were escorted away from the area immediately and remained safe under staff supervision throughout the incident. The school also said it was unable to arrange an earlier departure, so transportation went forward as planned.
Springfield Public Schools said a student was taken away in an ambulance after the incident, but did not confirm the school or the student’s condition. That left the central question of what caused the emergency unanswered.
High Meadow was hosting the field trip when the student became unresponsive, and officials said they will check in with students when they return to school and provide support as needed. Staff will also be available for any students who need additional help, and families were encouraged to speak with their children and reach out with concerns.
For the students on the trip, the immediate danger appears to have been contained. What remains unresolved is the condition of the student taken by ambulance and how the school district will account for the emergency when classes resume.
