Kentucky football player Nic "Happy" Smith has died, UK Athletics confirmed on Thursday, naming the redshirt freshman defensive lineman as Nicholas Smith (2006–2026).
The university identified Smith as a redshirt freshman from Loganville, Georgia and as a sophomore in the Community Leadership and Development program in the Martin‑Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. Coach Will Stein issued a statement saying, "Today our hearts are broken," and added, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic's family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him."
Stein called Smith's death "a tremendous loss for our program and university community" and said the team "will continue to support one another and honor his memory." UK Athletics asked members of the community to respect the family's privacy as the school and team process the loss.
Smith was listed on the UK roster as a defensive lineman. His profile on the program site used the nickname Nic "Happy" Smith and described him by teammates and staff as "Big Happ" and — in a small personal detail on his bio — a good cook. The university confirmed the student‑athlete status and academic program as part of its announcement.
The university did not release how Smith died. A local television station had reported earlier that a member of the Kentucky football program had died; UK Athletics then confirmed the identity and asked for privacy. Beyond that confirmation, officials have not provided cause or further details.
UK Athletics directed students and staff to support resources available through the Office for Student Success and encouraged anyone affected to use those services. The university also reiterated its request for privacy for Smith's family as they make arrangements and as the athletic department and campus community grieve.
