The SF Giants recalled reliever Carson Seymour from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned Wilkin Ramos back to Sacramento ahead of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs.
Seymour made his return Friday in the Giants’ 18-3 win over the Cubs, working three innings and allowing three earned runs. He began the year in Sacramento and had leaned heavily on his fastball in Triple-A, throwing a version of it more than 80 percent of the time before the call-up.
Ramos, who had been promoted earlier this week, made two appearances with the Giants. In his second outing — against the Milwaukee Brewers — he did not record an out and three runs scored. The club sent him back to Sacramento after those appearances.
Ramos had earned a promotion after a strong minor-league stint with Sacramento, where he posted a 2.00 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 27 innings. The club had moved to add what it described as a different look to the bullpen when it brought him up, but his two brief major-league appearances failed to stick.
The roster shuffle also closed another chapter for catcher Logan Porter. The Giants designated Porter for assignment earlier in the week to make room for Wilkin Ramos and Buddy Kennedy. Porter cleared waivers and was outrighted to Sacramento; he declined that outright assignment and elected free agency.
Buddy Kennedy remained with the major-league club after the roster move. For now, the immediate consequence is a bullpen that features Seymour for the three-game set in Chicago and sends Ramos back to Sacramento for more work.
How long Carson Seymour will remain in the Giants’ bullpen is not confirmed. The team made the swap before the series, but no timeline was announced for Seymour’s stay or for another move to replace him if necessary.
