Keeneland published its Pick of the Week for Race 10 at Saratoga — the Grade 1, $500,000 Woody Stephens Stakes for three-year-olds at seven furlongs — naming Civil Liberty, Crude Velocity and Solitude Dude as the top win contenders ahead of Saturday’s 4:52 p.m. ET post time.
The picks land with clear betting weight: Crude Velocity arrives unbeaten in three starts and carries a 116 Equibase figure from his second race back, capped by a win in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile five weeks before Saratoga. SportsLine had Crude Velocity installed as the 9-5 favorite in its pre-race odds, with Englishman listed at 3-1, Solitude Dude 6-1 and both Gilded Bandit and Obliteration at 8-1 among the nine-horse field. Keeneland’s analysis made the case that if Crude Velocity replicates his April 4 effort and the others do not improve, he will win.
Keeneland’s choice of Civil Liberty as a top win contender introduces the day's main friction. Civil Liberty, who earned a 101 Equibase Speed Figure in his most recent victory and won easily on April 12 in his second start off the layoff, was beaten by a neck by Crude Velocity on March 7 after stalking third and taking the lead at the eighth pole. Despite that loss, Keeneland argued he is likely to improve in his third race off the layoff and has a shot at pulling off the upset, keeping him squarely on bettors’ radars.
Solitude Dude is the other headline selection. He has won all four of his one-turn races, shortened up to seven furlongs to take the Bay Shore Stakes on April 18, and carries recent stakes figures of 94, 96 and 101 in his last three wins. Jeff Hochman, weighing the card for bettors, said he liked Solitude Dude enough that he nearly made him his top pick, a reminder that the seven-furlong specialist has strong support among handicappers.
Keeneland also pushed specific exacta options: Obliteration and Englishman are named as horses to consider for second in exacta plays. Englishman showed speed in the Pat Day Mile, leading from the start, but according to the race notes he lacked the late kick shown by Crude Velocity — a dynamic that helps explain the race shape bettors should expect at Saratoga.
The practical takeaway for those wagering on Race 10 is straightforward: the handicapper set a lineup that places Crude Velocity as the class and favorite, while keeping Civil Liberty and Solitude Dude as plausible win candidates because of recent improvement and race shape. SportsLine’s published odds give a snapshot of market expectations, but Keeneland’s commentary expressly invites bettors to back two of the three at prices of 7-2 or higher if they prefer value.
The Woody Stephens runs at 4:52 p.m. ET and will answer the central question the picks leave open: will Crude Velocity extend an unbeaten streak with a back-to-back stakes performance, or will Civil Liberty’s progress off the layoff or Solitude Dude’s one-turn form decide the outcome? The race itself, not the previews, will settle which of the three contenders proves the most convincing on the day.
