Pittsburgh Weather: Strong to severe storms expected Saturday afternoon

Pittsburgh Weather turned stormy Saturday as strong to severe storms were expected to develop after 2 p.m. and move through the city around 4 to 6 p.m. The biggest threats were damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours, with an isolated tornado not ruled out.

June 6 was marked as a First Alert Weather Day, and the timing made the forecast especially important for afternoon plans, travel and outdoor events. Wind gusts ahead of the system were expected to run around 20 to 30 mph, with temperatures near 80 before the storms arrived.

The severe weather setup was a slight risk on the Outlook, rated 2 out of 5, but the atmosphere still had the ingredients in place for one or two warnings in some areas. That gap between the formal rating and the forecast’s hazards was the main reason forecasters were watching the afternoon so closely.

After 9 to 10 p.m., the storm line was expected to drop south of I-70, leaving behind the chance for patchy fog overnight. Sunday was expected to be quiet and dry with highs in the mid 80s, before next week turns very humid and hot, with highs in the upper 80s and feels in the 90s for some.

The next rain chances after that are expected Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, so the main question for Pittsburgh is not whether the day turns wet, but how many neighborhoods get the strongest line before it moves on.
