A Wednesday evening traffic stop on Memorial Parkway ended in a pursuit through downtown Huntsville and the arrest of Jared Isaiah Montgomery, 42, after officers said he refused commands and a K-9 unit was called in to help take him into custody.
The incident began around 6 p.m., when an officer saw a vehicle traveling well above the posted speed limit near Martin Road. Police said the driver did not stop when officers tried to pull the vehicle over, kept going north on Memorial Parkway and then turned onto Clinton Avenue before coming to a stop in the 700 block near Heart of Huntsville Drive.
Once the vehicle stopped, officers ordered the driver out, but Montgomery allegedly refused to comply. A K-9 unit was deployed and apprehended him, police said. Montgomery, of Hartselle, sustained minor injuries during the arrest, was treated and released from the hospital, and was then booked into jail.
He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol by 0.08 percent or more by weight of alcohol in blood, attempting to elude a police officer as a misdemeanor and liquor open container of alcohol in a vehicle. The case is a reminder that the downtown traffic corridor can turn into a fast-moving police response in minutes, even on a night when the primary keyword may suggest weather coverage; this was not a weather story at all, but a pursuit and arrest in Huntsville.
