Charlotte woke up Wednesday under mostly clear skies, a light southwest breeze and temperatures in the upper 60s, but the quiet start did not last long. Forecasters said the Charlotte metro was headed for a high of 93 degrees, with afternoon readings climbing into the low to mid 90s and no watches, warnings or advisories in effect.
The heat made Wednesday one of the hottest days so far this season, and the dryness held through the daytime hours. Humidity was also noticeably higher than last week, making the air feel heavier even before noon. A warm night followed, with skies staying mainly clear and lows settling near 68 degrees.
The setup changes Thursday as a cold front approaches from the west. Clouds are expected to build through the day, and scattered showers and storms should become more likely by late afternoon and evening. Higher rain chances are then expected to continue into Friday and the start of the weekend, ending the stretch of dry, sunny weather that carried Charlotte through Wednesday.
For now, the city’s weather story is simple: hot, dry and calm on Wednesday, then more unsettled as the front moves in and brings a better shot at rain.
