Gala Retail Launches Nationwide Search for Top Baker

Gala Retail is inviting home bakers across County Meath to enter its 2026 competition. The retailer is working with Virgin Media Television to find Ireland’s next baking stars.

The chain operates more than 230 Group stores nationwide. Organisers say last year’s contest attracted hundreds of entries.

Prizes and final event

Winners will share €2,500 in cash prizes. The Best Baker receives €1,500, and the Junior Baker (ages 12–16) takes €1,000.

A live bake-off final will be held on 28 May 2026. Judges will include food writer Catherine Leyden and presenter Cassie Stokes.

Broadcast and exposure

The final will be filmed for Ireland AM. Finalists will gain national exposure across Virgin Media Television platforms.

How to enter

Entrants must submit a recipe and a photo or video of their bake. Entries must belong to one of six categories.

  • Cupcakes
  • Muffins
  • Scones
  • Breads
  • Tarts
  • Traybakes

Entries close on Sunday 10 May 2026. Finalists will be announced shortly after the closing date.

Support and judging panel

The 2026 search is supported by O’Brien Ingredients. The supplier brings over 60 years’ experience in bakery ingredients.

Gala Retail CEO Gary Desmond praised the quality of last year’s bakes. He highlighted winner Mary Buckley from Cork and junior baker Leah Mallinson’s vanilla cupcakes.

Rachel Grant, Client Solutions Manager at Virgin Media Television, said the partnership will help tell bakers’ stories. Ireland AM will showcase finalists and their baking journeys.
