Pentagon: US Forces Seize Sanctioned Oil Tanker in Indian Ocean
US forces boarded the M/T Tifani on Tuesday, the Pentagon said. The vessel had been previously sanctioned for smuggling Iranian crude in Asia.
Details of the boarding
The Pentagon said its personnel conducted a right-of-visit maritime interdiction. Officials reported the boarding occurred without incident.
The announcement did not specify the exact time or precise location of the operation. The Pentagon used a social media post to describe the action.
Vessel identity and movements
Ship-tracking data showed the Tifani was carrying oil on Tuesday in the Indian Ocean. The ship was located between Sri Lanka and Indonesia at that time.
The Pentagon described the M/T Tifani as “stateless.” The vessel is registered under a Botswana flag, according to records.
Policy and military posture
The Pentagon reiterated its intent to pursue global maritime enforcement. US forces will disrupt illicit networks and interdict sanctioned vessels wherever they operate.
Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the blockade would extend beyond Iranian waters and the CENTCOM area. He added that forces in other regions will pursue vessels tied to Iran or providing material support.
Contraband rules and legal authority
The military published a notice outlining goods it deems contraband. The list covers items that could support armed conflict, including weapons, oil, metals and electronics.
The notice states such goods “are subject to capture at any place beyond neutral territory.” The service said it will board, search and seize merchant vessels regardless of location.
Regional backdrop
The operation came hours before an already tenuous ceasefire between the US and Iran was due to expire. Pakistan was reported to be attempting to broker talks between Washington and Tehran.
