Cubs Bullpen Hit Hard: Closer Daniel Palencia Placed on IL with Oblique Strain

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs placed closer Daniel Palencia on the 15-day injured list on Friday, April 17, 2026. Team officials said he sustained a left oblique strain.

Palencia had not allowed a run in five innings this season. He recorded one save before the injury sidelined him.

Palencia’s recent form

He took over closing duties last May after Ryan Pressley faltered. Palencia battled early command issues in his career but was steady last year.

In 2025 he posted a 2.91 ERA. He added 22 saves over 52 2/3 innings.

Bullpen health concerns

The Cubs bullpen has been hit hard this month. Closer Daniel Palencia was placed on IL after the oblique strain diagnosis.

Veteran Phil Maton landed on the injured list a week earlier with right knee tendinitis. Maton had struggled through four innings this season but is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

On Sunday, right-hander Hunter Harvey went on the IL with right triceps inflammation. He has not resumed throwing and the club says he must be pain-free before returning.

Roster implications

All three relievers were viewed as key high-leverage options heading into the season. The bullpen underwent significant rebuilding during the offseason.

Manager Craig Counsell noted that bullpens evolve over a season. He also said injuries create chances for other pitchers to rise.

No corresponding roster move had been announced at the time of publication. The club will need internal reinforcements while it evaluates next steps.
