Orioles Secure Trade for Christian Encarnacion-Strand
The Baltimore Orioles have acquired first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand from the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds designated him for assignment last week and received cash considerations in return.
Transaction details
Baltimore optioned Encarnacion-Strand to Triple-A Norfolk. To create a 40-man roster spot, the club transferred right-hander Yaramil Hiraldo to the 60-day injured list.
The Orioles also added Weston Wilson and placed Ryan Mountcastle on the 60-day IL in related moves. These roster shifts clear immediate space while keeping depth in the system.
Player background and recent performance
Encarnacion-Strand is 26 years old. Cincinnati originally acquired him from Minnesota in the 2022 trade that sent Tyler Mahle to the Twins.
He broke into the majors with a strong first run. In his first 63 big-league games he hit 13 homers and posted a .270/.328/.477 line, translating to a 113 wRC+.
Injuries and struggles
Early 2024 proved difficult for him. He underwent season-ending wrist surgery in June 2024.
He returned in 2025 but struggled and was optioned to the minors. His major-league production over the last two seasons fell to a combined .199/.227/.337 line.
Triple-A track record and scouting notes
At Triple-A last season he hit 11 home runs in 62 games. His line there was .245/.310/.493, a 107 wRC+.
His Triple-A walk rate was 6.7 percent and his strikeout rate was 24.6 percent. He has shown power but has uneven plate discipline.
Positional fit and roster context
Encarnacion-Strand has primarily played first base with some time at third. Cincinnati added Ke’Bryan Hayes last year, and Sal Stewart has handled the other corner.
With his stock lower, the Reds made him expendable. The Orioles secured the trade for Christian Encarnacion-Strand as a low-risk depth move.
How Baltimore will use him
He still has options, so Baltimore can keep him in Norfolk while monitoring his progress. For now, he should receive regular at-bats at Triple-A.
Recent injuries to Adley Rutschman, Ryan Mountcastle and Tyler O’Neill have thinned Baltimore’s offense. Samuel Basallo is catching more, which opens DH opportunities.
If further injuries occur, Encarnacion-Strand could be recalled to provide corner power. Until then, he will serve as organizational depth.
Yaramil Hiraldo’s status
Hiraldo was placed on the 15-day injured list about a week before his transfer. He has inflammation in his throwing shoulder.
Moving him to the 60-day IL makes him ineligible to return until early June. The club’s action suggests they do not expect a quick recovery.
