Mamdani Proposes Overdue Grand Army Plaza Redesign
Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday unveiled a plan to reconfigure traffic at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza. The proposal would close a busy roadway and expand public space linked directly to Prospect Park.
Scope of the plan
The design would connect the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch to the park. It would also create new pedestrian and cyclist space around the Bailey Fountain.
City officials say the overhaul could dramatically improve safety at the chaotic intersection. Planners also expect clearer vehicle circulation.
Transit and usage impacts
The proposal aims to improve service on the B41 and B6 bus lines. Those routes serve more than 30,000 riders every day.
DOT leaders pointed to prior park projects as proof of success. Officials said adding public space often becomes immediately popular.
Community feedback so far
Workshops held in 2024 surveyed roughly 3,600 people. More than 85 percent backed a redesign linking the park to the Arch and central fountain.
City Hall said the outreach will continue with both virtual and in-person sessions. Officials will take further comments before finalizing plans.
Local reactions
George Surovov, a nearby landscape architect, praised the effort to join the two spaces. He warned that no single layout will satisfy every user.
Surovov described himself as a cyclist, parent, and occasional driver. He said those overlapping needs create unavoidable tension at the plaza.
Public meetings and next steps
The city will host a tent at the plaza on Thursday, April 23, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Staff will return on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
A virtual forum is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. An online survey will remain open through May 31.
Planners said Mamdani proposes an overdue redesign that prioritizes safety and access. Filmogaz.com will follow developments and provide updates as the project advances.
