Evan Williams Receives Three-Year Sentence for Intentional Grievous Bodily Harm

Evan Williams has been jailed for three years after a Cardiff Crown Court jury convicted him last month. He was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The attack

The incident occurred one evening in December 2024. The victim was 72-year-old Martin Dandridge, who suffered a broken arm.

Williams attacked Dandridge after wrongly believing he was a lamper. The error led to serious injury.

Court hearing and sentence

Sentencing took place at Cardiff Crown Court on 14 April 2026. Recorder Angharad Price described the offence as appalling and unacceptable.

The judge imposed a three-year sentence for intentional grievous bodily harm. The court emphasized that private citizens must not take the law into their own hands.

Mitigation and character references

Williams pleaded for leniency through his counsel, David Elias KC. Elias urged the court to consider a suspended term instead of immediate custody.

The defence submitted an unusually large volume of testimonials. Solicitors received 570 character references, with 102 provided to the judge beforehand.

Impact on his training operation

Williams runs a training business that now faces uncertainty. His barrister told the court the operation depends heavily on his presence and expertise.

Following the conviction, the trainer’s licence was transferred into his wife Cath’s name. The court heard doubts about whether she will continue to run the yard without him.
