Background: the 2002 murders
Huntley had been serving a life term for the murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman. The girls disappeared on 4 August 2002 in Soham, Cambridgeshire.
The children had left a family barbecue to buy sweets. Their bodies were found in a ditch about 10 miles away, 13 days later, after a large police search.
Huntley denied the killings but was convicted at the Old Bailey in 2003. He received a life sentence with a recommended minimum term of 40 years.
Associated convictions
At the time of the murders, Huntley lived with Maxine Carr. She worked as a teaching assistant at the victims’ primary school.
Carr provided a false alibi and was later jailed for 21 months for perverting the course of justice. She now lives under a new identity.
