Inside Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson’s 15-Year Love Story

Filmogaz.com looks back at the partnership between Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson. Their relationship began on Broadway in 1993. It lasted until Richardson’s death in 2009.

Stage meeting and early chemistry

The pair met while performing in a Broadway revival of Anna Christie. The production opened on January 14, 1993. Critics praised Richardson’s performance and noted Neeson’s supportive partnering.

Richardson had urged Neeson to take the part. At the time, she was married to producer Robert Fox. Neeson had notable past relationships, including one with Helen Mirren.

Public debut and deepening bond

Their relationship went public at the Tony Awards in June 1993. Neeson was filming Schindler’s List in Poland while their romance grew.

For Richardson’s 30th birthday, Neeson signed a card “Lots of love, Oskar.” He later said that gesture made him realize the relationship was serious.

Marriage and family life

The couple wed on July 3, 1994, at their farmhouse in Millbrook, New York. About 70 guests attended the small ceremony.

Guests included Emma Thompson, Steven Spielberg and Mia Farrow. Richardson wore a Donna Karan gown and surprised Neeson by singing Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love.”

They appeared together in the film Nell soon after marrying. Their sons were born in quick succession. Micheál was born on June 22, 1995, and Daniel on August 27, 1996.

Accident and untimely death

In March 2009, Richardson fell while skiing at Mont Tremblant in Quebec. She struck her head and initially seemed only mildly injured.

Her condition later worsened. Doctors declared her brain dead. She was placed on life support, and Neeson said goodbye.

Richardson had previously agreed not to have life artificially prolonged. As an organ donor, she gave her heart, kidneys and liver.

The family confirmed her death on March 18, 2009. She was 45 years old, and the official cause was an epidural hematoma.

Grief, memories and continuing work

Neeson has spoken about the unpredictability of grief. In 2014 he described grief as overwhelming and destabilizing.

He has said work helped him and kept their sons supported. In a 2020 remark he said he still speaks to her at her grave daily.

In October 2024 he told People his priority remained his teenage sons. In 2025 he reflected fondly on acting with Richardson in Anna Christie.

Legacy in film and family

Their sons have remained part of Neeson’s life and career. Micheál later worked alongside his father on Made in Italy.

Their time together combined stage craft, film work and family life. Inside their 15-year love story were public success and private devotion.
