Art Zoo Museum Unveils Lab-Grown Dinosaur Leather in New Exhibit
The Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam is showcasing a unique exhibit that features the world’s first handbag made from lab-grown T. rex leather. This innovative accessory was developed through a collaboration involving VML, The Organoid Company, and Lab-Grown Leather.
Creation of Lab-Grown Dinosaur Leather
The handbag’s creation began with the acquisition of fossilized collagen sequences from T. rex remains discovered in the United States. Using advanced AI modeling and computational biology, researchers reconstructed the complete collagen blueprint. This synthesized DNA was then inserted into a carrier cell line and cultivated using the Advanced Tissue Engineering Platform (ATEP), part of the Elemental-X product stream.
This innovative process resulted in a bio-fabricated material that mimics traditional animal hides. Importantly, this synthetic leather avoids the ethical concerns associated with animal slaughter and the environmental impact of chemical tanning.
The Handbag Design
The finished product is a striking teal handbag designed by Michal Hadas of Enfin Levé, a Berlin techwear label. The handbag features a modern, angular design with decorative incisions that resemble dinosaur scratch marks.
